US Heat Maps for Individual Budget Categories
The 2023 U.S. State Budget Heat Maps visualize how each state allocates its annual expenditures across key public service categories such as Public Welfare, Education, Health, Transportation, and Public Safety. Each map presents spending as a share of the total state budget, with darker shades of green representing a higher percentage devoted to that category. This allows users to quickly identify regional spending patterns and compare fiscal priorities across all 50 states.
All data are sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s State Government Finance dataset for Fiscal Year 2023 — the most comprehensive, standardized source available. These maps reveal not only how states differ in policy emphasis, but also how the balance between welfare, education, and infrastructure spending reflects broader socioeconomic and political landscapes. Together, they provide a clear, visual snapshot of how public resources are distributed in the final pre-shutdown year of federal reporting.
